Top 5 videos that make you want to learn beatbox

When I discovered beatbox in 2007, I really had no idea what it was.

I remember I’d just got ADSL (“high-speed” internet connection at the time) when I came across my first beatbox video.

I watched it over and over again, without really understanding how it was possible to sing and make a rhythm at the same time!

So I thought It required a gift or a superpower to be able to make music with my mouth.

A few days later, I met up with a friend with whom I’d lost touch.

He told me he was learning beatboxing through workshops with L.O.S, the first French champion (in 2006).

So I asked him to give me a demo and he showed me:

    P t K t P t P K t …

It was even more impressive than the video even if he was just starting out!

Above all, I realised that anyone can learn to beatbox and that all it takes is a bit of practice.

I’ve been beatboxing for 17 years now, but if it were up to me, I really wish I’d discovered it sooner 😉

Today, I’m sharing with you my TOP 5 videos that make you want to learn to beatbox:

#5: Rahzel – If your mother only knew

Rahzel, aka “The Godfather of Noise”.

A true precursor of human beatbox, he made a name for himself in the 2000s with his beatbox-only cover of Aaliyah’s song “If your mother only knew”.

Rahzel Live “If Your Mother Only Knew”

What is most impressive is his ability to create vocal percussion while simultaneously singing the text.

In fact, he uses percussive elements (the beat) to punctuate the syllables of the lyrics.

Once this technique has been mastered, the sequence of sounds is so fast that the auditory illusion is perfect.

#4: Kenny Muhammad in the Human Chamber Orchestra

Like Rahzel, Kenny Muhammad aka “The Human Orchestra” is a true pioneer of Human Beatbox.

In the 2000s, when the Internet was still relatively inaccessible and beatbox learning even less so, Kenny Muhammad arrived with his own style, distinguished by his percussive sounds and revolutionary rhythms.

Like a real drummer, he popularised the inward K snare, an inspired beatbox sound that allows you to catch your breath.

#3: 4 minutes Hip Hop History by Eklips

As well as being an excellent beatboxer, Eklips is also an outstanding imitator.

Able to cover the vocals of virtually any American or French rapper, Eklips has made a major contribution to raising the profile of beatboxing in France.

In a video medley, he has fun covering hip-hop classics in beatbox, adding quality transitions just like a DJ!

4 minutes Hip Hop History by Eklips

A very effective talent when it comes to impressing those around him!

Needless to say, with a loop pedal (Loop Station) to record his rhythms, his talent is multiplied tenfold.

#2: Joseph de la nouvelle star aka Poolpo

It was the buzz video that personally launched me into beatboxing in 2007.

What a surprise it was to see this beatboxer appear on a programme initially dedicated to singers.

After a perfectly ordinary entrance, he offered to do a beatbox piece before singing, and then the magic happened…

Joseph de la nouvelle star a.k.a. Poolpo

Once again, it’s mainly his mastery of humming (a technique that involves humming while beatboxing at the same time) and his covers of super-famous songs that win over all the judges and spectators.

#1: BERYWAM – Audition Tu Si Que Vales (Beatbox)

Who else but BERYWAM could have topped this chart?

Originally made up of four beatboxers with a unique style: BEatness, RYthmind, WAwad and MB14, later replaced by Beasty (BERYWAM).

These unrivalled artists honed their skills in the French championships and other artistic projects, before going on to form the most iconic beatbox group of our generation.

Their growing success has seen them perform on TV in numerous countries: France, Italy, USA, etc., and they have become the most followed French group on TikTok at the time of writing.

Here’s one of their performances that broke all viewing records.

BERYWAM – Audition Tu Si Que Vales (Beatbox)

These performances have impressed millions of people, both in France and abroad.

They also inspired some beatbox fans (like me) to learn.

Personally, I was lucky enough to be able to attend introductory workshops in my town afterwards, but not everyone is in the same situation.

That’s why we founded LYREBIRD, so you can learn beatbox online from the best!

And what about you? What videos made you want to learn beatbox?

I’m curious to know if you know of any others, so please reply in the comments if you’d like to share them with us 🙂

  • What is beatbox and how to learn ?

    What is Human Beatbox?

Human Beatbox is the art of producing music using the entire phonatory apparatus: mouth, throat, nose, vocal cords…

Whether you’re imitating any instrument to create a rhythm, adding a melody while singing along, or simply making sound effects, this discipline offers unlimited freedom of creation and expression, and all without the need for a physical instrument!

    The Anatomy of a Beatboxer
    The Anatomy of a Beatboxer

It’s an ongoing game of learning music through listening and imitation, accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

That’s right! Anyone can beatbox. In fact, even as a child, it’s highly likely that you had fun imitating car noises, birds, humming songs and so on. This gets lost as you get older, and yet these are your first steps in beatboxing.

However, there’s no secret to it: you need to train as you would for any other discipline.

To do this, you need to work on rhythm and build up your phonatory apparatus to produce increasingly original, clean and powerful sounds.

The most determined beatboxers manage to make a living from it, distinguishing themselves by their style and the emotions they convey through their shows: joy, surprise, sadness, anger…

Everyone is free to create the music they want, according to their own sounds, tastes and inspirations… That’s what makes Human Beatbox so rich.

    What does Human Beatbox offer?

Beatbox is first and foremost a learning game. The aim is to have fun inventing and reproducing sounds from instruments or everyday life.

These sounds are then used to create and/or repeat the rhythms that make up a piece of music.

In this way, beatboxing appeals to the ear, learning by listening and miming.

Beatboxing is a great way to work on your musical ear and improve your listening skills.

It makes it easier to open up to yourself and to others, because when you share your music, you share your emotions.

What’s more, beatboxing offers absolute freedom of expression. Produce sounds with your mouth, nose, vocal cords, etc., and combine them: the potential for creativity seems limitless.

Learning beatbox is also about getting to know your body and how to use it as an instrument. You get to know your voice, its anatomy, its particularities… It boosts your self-confidence.

Last but not least, beatbox appears to be an excellent therapeutic remedy for people with cognitive, language and hearing disorders. In fact, beatboxing is a remarkable alternative to the classic vocal re-education exercises offered by speech therapists.

If you’re interested in the subject, I recommend reading the following article: “Troubles du langage : le beatbox délie les langues” (Aurélien Defer, 2018).

In short, beatboxing is an excellent tool for personal development:

As much for children’s musical awakening as for teenagers and adults in search of freedom of expression through the practice of music 🙂.

How do you learn to beatbox?

Chances are you discovered beatboxing on TV or on social networks, or even had the chance to attend a live beatbox performance.

In any case, the performance blew you away and now you want to learn seriously?

There are many ways to learn the basics of beatboxing:

The lucky ones have the chance to take part in live introductory and advanced workshops.

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of what’s on offer in some cities. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you live nearby:

    Beatbox workshops available

    International:

    🇫🇷 France:

(If you know of any others, please get in touch so we can improve our list)

Attending to initiation workshops is a great way of learning the basics, meeting beatboxers of your own level and motivating yourself to progress together.

However, these workshops are limited (physical and geographical constraints) and don’t allow you to progress at your own pace (they are often collective).

You can also book private lessons with an experienced beatboxer if you’re lucky enough to know one, although this is financially out of reach for most people.

Nevertheless, each beatboxer’s pedagogy is unique, since their knowledge is not centralized.

Finally, you can learn the basics of beatboxing online with free tutorials. YouTube is a veritable goldmine of beatbox video tutorials explaining how to learn a sound, a technique or how to cover a piece of music.

In fact, if you’re interested in learning new beatbox sounds, we release one video tutorial a week on our Lyrebirdbeatbox YouTube channel!

The problem is that these tutorials aren’t always understood, they sometimes lack structure and only allow you to learn specific sounds.

Our innovative solution: Lyrebird Beatbox School

That’s why we created Lyrebird Beatbox School, the first beatbox school to share the learning methods of the masters of the discipline.

Through our video lessons, live masterclasses and artistic showcase events, we want to give anyone who loves beatbox the chance to learn and progress, whatever their level and wherever they live.

Our 3-month learning programme for beginners : Record your 1’ beatbox freestyle or cover alongside masters of the discipline

    Lyrebird Beatbox Beginner Programme

In fact, registration for our online programme for beginners is now open. If you’d like to be one of our students and learn beatbox with guidance, you can view details of our learning path by clicking here.

By the end of this programme, you’ll be able to beatbox and you’ll even be able to record your first beatbox freestyle or cover on video.

Joining our school also gives you the chance to meet, talk and jam (make music together) with the other students and teachers.

We attach a great deal of importance to keeping track of our students, thanks to our teaching tools (group lessons / masterclasses, dashboard, etc.) and our online and physical community events: great opportunities to get together and share your passion!

  • Beatbox Trends  – Part 1

    Beatbox Trends  – Part 1

Beatboxing, as we know it now in 2022 has evolved in many shapes, forms and trends over the past 40 years. While the history can be dated back for many many years, we will look at it’s modern origins in the 1980’s and see how the trends and styles evolved over those years into the 1990’s.

    The Human Beatbox

In the 1980’s beatbox pioneers such as Doug E Fresh, Buffy from The Fat Boys and Biz Markie made their name performing at hip hop shows across New York City.

With beatboxing being so fresh and new to the scene, it meant the sounds these artists created were very unique. For example Doug E Fresh was famous for his clicks and click rolls, Buffy for his breathing techniques and Biz Markie for his signature snare and rapping while beatboxing.

Buffy – The Fat Boys Human Beat Box New York Hot Tracks 1984 (source : LONGLIVEROCKTHEWHO’s Youtube Channel)

Biz Markie – One Two (source : Biz Markie’s Youtube Channel)

From videos and live shows you can see audiences were wowed by these skills that they had never seen before and really put a spotlight on these beatbox legends that paved the way for the modern generation.

    Beatboxing in groups

The beatboxer played a key part in many hip hop groups from the 1980’s & 90’s. Their role was mainly to supply a beat for the emcees or add additional texture to tracks that were performed. Buffy from The Fat Boys is a great example of this, being the backbone of some of their tracks and live performances and they even had a track released called “The Human Beatbox”. Doug E. Fresh also used his beatboxing as part of the Get Fresh Crew where he rapped and beatboxed throughout one of their songs, “The Show”, “Lad Di Da Di” and “The Original Human Beat Box”. Going into the 90’s, Rahzel “The Godfather of Noise” & Scratch from The Roots would beatbox at live shows and performances to intro songs, add different dynamics to performances and would also MC on tracks for a true versatile performance.

Rahzel & The Roots (source : chambers of hourrors’s Youtube channel)

Scratch – The Roots (source : 5henan1gans’s Youtube channel)

We can see with beatboxers such as Rahzel and Scratch that the style and sound evolved a bit. Rahzel created more robotic and bass synth type sounds and Scratch truly imitates the sound of a DJ and vinyl records.

Source : Rahzel & Scratch on Beatbox TV’s Youtube Channel

What is also an interesting find is the video below of Ready Roc C, the former beatboxer who toured with Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. In this performance he had a solo section in their show and performed covers of well known songs and TV Themes of that era, plus a fun segment imitating a video arcade game of Donkey Kong. This was definitely a great crowd pleasing performance and worked well for this kind of show.

Ready Roc C (source : Jonah Sherr’s Youtube channel)

    Notable Sounds

Looking back at available content from these times we can see an amazing range of unique and original sounds. Beatboxer’s core or basic sounds (kick, hi-hat & snare) were strong and identifiable to the artist. For example you can hear the clear difference between a Doug E. Fresh kick and snare against the same from Buffy or Rahzel which made each beatboxer stand out in their own right. Added to this every beatboxer had a recognisable “special sound” or technique. We can hear this in Rahzel’s robotic sound fx and bass, Doug E. Fresh’s click rolls and high pitch synth sound and Buffy’s breathing/vocal technique and lip bass

    Summary

Even in the early mainstream stages of beatboxing, we can see these pioneers of the art form really set the trends and building blocks that are still relevant and quite rightly used today. This validates more than ever that you must show respect to those who came before you and paved the way.

Are they beatbox pioneers we have missed who definitely need a mention? Are there any other trends in this era you can spot? Let us know in the comments!

In the next article, we will look at how the evolution of the internet and more beatboxers being able to connect worldwide introduced different trends into the scene.

A BEATBOX EVENT WITH THE FRENCH TOUCH

The competition took place on Friday November 19th at Le Ferrailleur in Nantes.

It was broadcasted live on Beatbox France’s YouTube channel thanks to a high-quality video stream which was very appreciated by online viewers around the world.

It had been more than 2 years since this championship had taken place, suffice to say that the participants were eager to show their progress.

This edition began on a sad note, following severe events at the Grand Beatbox Battle 21, an awareness against harassment and sexual violence had to be addressed and was kindly received by the audience thanks to the intervention of Aliénor, president of the Toulouse beatbox association Underground Beatbox Battle.

The event was sold out thanks to 300 spectators who came from all over France to support the participants:

16 loopers, pre-qualified by video, had the opportunity to show their talents on stage for 3 minutes each, in front of a jury of professionals.

This one was composed of 2 world champions and future senseis of Lyrebird, Saro and Faya Braz, as well as Chris TheOdian (French Loopstation champion 2019).

The common goal of all the participants was simple: to impress the jury enough to be qualified in the TOP 8 in order to compete in the Battle phase (1 against 1) and thus claim the title of new French beatbox champion in the Loopstation category.

    SUCCESSION IS ASSURED

French Loopstation Beatbox Championship 2021 – Battle bracket

Top favourite of the competition, BreZ (French Loopstation champion 2018) remained faithful to the predictions by winning the competition after a final of anthology 100% Breton against Mike Fly.

Congratulations to our two finalists who show us that experience and work always pay off 😉

Here are some excerpts of their elimination rounds:

Furthermore, 9 out of 16 participants made their first live performance physically at a French championship and they were pleasantly surprised!

Special mention goes to Ipso, who won this year’s Best Show title thanks to his musicality which could make Tom Thum blush.

    [presto_player id=12806]

We also congratulate Elash, only 13 years old, who for his first participation knew how to make the crowd dance as it should thanks to quality drops.

The icing on the cake was the chance to witness exclusive showcases starting with Robin (2017 French Loopstation Champion) in complete control of the famous RC-505 MK2. Thank you, Commissioner!

    [presto_player id=12812]

Afterwards, we also enjoyed the unique showcases of our juries: Saro, Faya Braz and Chris TheOdian, lastly with our favourite duo of world champions: UniTeam composed of Alem & Alexinho.

BACK TO THE ROOTS OF LOOPSTATION

Unlike the Grand Beatbox Battle 21, only one of the 16 participants chose to use a “second device” other than the loopstation RC-505 (a second device allowing the use of additional effects) and it was Vincent Vinel a.k.a. Double V using the Line 6 from Helix.

    [presto_player id=12803]

We saw a return to a more “classic” use of the loopstation, with the greatest happiness from the purists of the machine.

But everyone is waiting impatiently to be able to use the promising new loopstation model the Boss RC 505 Mark 2 a.k.a. MK2 recently in pre-order which should also bring a breath of fresh air thanks to its new range of effects and features.

This means that this could be the last edition with only using the original model of the looper.

    THE DIFFICULTIES OF LIVE LOOPING

The only downside of the event was that some loopers had to start their round again because of technical problems or lack of stage experience.

This reminds us of the importance of good preparation in advance but also on stage to avoid a maximum of bad surprises.

Although the current situation makes it difficult to earn his spurs live, it gives us ideas of course topics on the loopstation to overcome these difficulties 😉

So, what would you like to learn on the loopstation ideally? Feel free to reply in the comments!

Grand Beatbox Battle 2021 – World League : feedbacks and results

The LYREBIRD team was at the Grand Beatbox Battle 2021 (GBB for short) at Warsaw in 🇵🇱 Poland for the 12th edition of the biggest international beatbox battle which took place from October 22nd to 25th, 2021. Here is the summary of the results and the strongest moments we had the chance to live.

An edition awaited more than ever

This collector’s edition, after having been postponed several times, finally took place with 2 new categories: “Tag Team Loop” (duo of loopers) and “Crew” (team of 3 members minimum) to the delight of the community.

Beatboxers and fans from all over the world gathered at Park Expo XXI during the competition, to share an unforgettable moment between enthusiasts : more than 80 participants, 3,000 spectators on site and 30,000 live on the YouTube livestream of Swissbeatbox !

This year, the organizers have gone all out:

A huge stage lined with gigantic LED screens to allow everyone to enjoy the details of the battles, but also exclusive showcases, such as those of 🇬🇧 ReepsOne, 🇫🇷 UniTeam, 🇫🇷 Saro or even 🇺🇸 Spiderhorse the whole highlighted by our favorite host 🇨🇦 Scott Jackson!

Best of all, this year those watching the competition on the stream had the pleasure of seeing 🇬🇧 Hobbit and 🇪🇸 Freddy Beat commenting on the battles live.

Aside from a few sound problems, we can say that this edition was a great success, and it was a pleasure to be back with the family after 2 years of absence!

    Our best memories

It’s hard to sum up all the emotions we experienced during these few days, but we have listed some of our favorite moments for you 🙂

    OUR SURPRISE

🇧🇪 FootboxG who beats 🇫🇷 Alexinho the reigning world champion for an anthology 1⁄8 final. An intense moment that we experienced live to the misfortune of the French but the pride of LYREBIRD 😀

    OUR TOP BATTLE

🇫🇷 River’ vs 🇫🇷 Colaps for a 100% French final (with 🇨🇴 Colombian origins) where the duo 🇫🇷 🇨🇴 Rogue Wave went punch-for-punch using spit snares as scathing as stab wounds …

In 12 years of competition the solo category’s champion title was the only one missing for France. Problem solved hands down by managing to have 2 French finalists 😃

    OUR FAVORITE FUN MOMENT

The 🇦🇹 austrians from M.O.M who finished their qualification in underwear… Unprecedented on the GBB stage in 12 years of events.

    OUR FAVORITE MOMENT OF COMPLICITY

🇫🇷 Rythmind and 🇫🇷 ChrisTheOdian collaborating on a cover of AC / DC’s Back in Black instead of facing each other during their little final … A great souvenir video in store!

The performances of our senseis at GBB 2021

The countries that provide the show

We are proud to see that 🇫🇷 France still plays its leading role on the international beatbox scene with no less than 7 titles won out of the 15 possible!

The 🇺🇸 United States are increasingly taking the front stage with 🇺🇸 Bizkit winning the Loopstation category and 🇺🇸 Inertia winning the 7-to-smoke champion title as well as the TOP 4 in the solo category.

Beatbox events: the ideal way to progress

We see that the beatbox evolves quickly thanks to the transmission and exchanges during community events such as online or physical battles.

This kind of initiative advances the discipline, gives motivation to continue to improve and experience ever stronger emotions.

This is what we want to promote with LYREBIRD via our community platform where you can share with other enthusiasts and soon participate to international events.

In addition, to help you to structure your beatbox you can get coached by masters of the discipline and increase your chances of participating in LYREBIRD events in order to show what you have learned 🙂

Je réserve mes leçons par visioconférence pour progresser plus rapidement ici.

And you, how did you experience this edition of GBB – World League 2021? We invite you to share your experience in the comments. In any case, we can not wait to go back to a beatbox event!
