Le Beatbox, tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui en 2022, a évolué sous de nombreuses formes et tendances au cours des 40 dernières années. Bien que son histoire puisse remonter à de nombreuses années, on va revenir sur ses origines modernes dans les années 1980 et regarder comment les tendances et les styles ont évolué au cours de ces années, jusque dans les années 1990.
Le Human Beatbox
Dans les années 1980, les pionniers du beatbox tels que Doug E Fresh, Buffy des Fat Boys et Biz Markie se sont fait un nom en se produisant dans des spectacles de hip-hop à New York.
Le beatbox étant si frais et nouveau sur la scène, les sons créés par ces artistes étaient uniques. Par exemple, Doug E Fresh était célèbre pour ses clics et ses click rolls, Buffy pour ses techniques de respiration et Biz Markie pour sa signature snare et son rap en beatbox.

Les vidéos et les spectacles en direct montrent que le public était impressionné par ces compétences qu’il n’avait jamais vu auparavant et ont mis en lumière ces légendes du beatbox qui ont ouvert la voie à la génération moderne.
Le beatbox dans les groupes
Le beatboxer a joué un rôle clé dans de nombreux groupes de hip-hop des années 1980 et 1990. Son rôle consistait principalement à fournir un rythme aux MCs ou à ajouter une texture supplémentaire aux morceaux joués.
Buffy, du groupe The Fat Boys, en est un bon exemple. Il était la colonne vertébrale de certains de leurs morceaux et de leurs performances live, et ils ont même sorti un morceau intitulé “The Human Beatbox”.
Doug E. Fresh a également utilisé son beatbox dans le cadre du Get Fresh Crew, où il a rappé et fait du beatbox dans quelques unes de leurs chansons, “The Show”, “Lad Di Da Di” et “The Original Human Beat Box”.
Dans les années 90, Rahzel, “The Godfather of Noise”, et Scratch, du groupe The Roots, pratiquaient le beatbox lors de spectacles et de performances en direct pour introduire des chansons, ajouter une dynamique différente aux performances et animer des morceaux pour une véritable performance polyvalente.

On peut voir avec des beatboxers comme Rahzel et Scratch que le style et le son ont un peu évolué. Rahzel a créé des sons plus robotiques et de type synthé basse et Scratch imite vraiment le son d’un DJ et des disques vinyles.

Une autre trouvaille intéressante est la vidéo ci-dessous de Ready Roc C, l’ancien beatboxeur qui a tourné avec Jazzy Jeff et The Fresh Prince. Dans cette performance, il avait une section solo dans leur spectacle et a exécuté des reprises de chansons bien connues et des thèmes de télévision de cette époque, ainsi qu’une partie amusante où il imite un jeu d’arcade vidéo de Donkey Kong. C’était sans aucun doute une performance qui a plu à la foule et qui a bien fonctionné pour ce genre de spectacle.

Sons remarquables
En examinant le contenu disponible de cette époque, on peut constater une gamme étonnante de sons uniques et originaux. Les sons de base des beatboxeurs (kick, hi-hat et snare) étaient forts et identifiables à l’artiste. Par exemple, on peut entendre la différence entre le kick et la caisse claire de Doug E. Fresh et ceux de Buffy ou Rahzel, ce qui permet à chaque beatboxeur de se démarquer. De plus, chaque beatboxeur avait un “son spécial” ou une technique reconnaissable. On peut l’entendre dans les effets sonores et les basses robotiques de Rahzel, les click rolls et les sons synthétiques aigus de Doug E. Fresh, ainsi que dans la technique de respiration/voix et les basses labiales de Buffy.
Synthese
Même dans les premières étapes du beatbox, nous pouvons voir que ces pionniers de l’art ont vraiment défini les tendances et les éléments de base qui sont toujours pertinents et utilisés à juste titre aujourd’hui. Cela confirme plus que jamais qu’il faut montrer du respect à ceux qui sont venus avant toi et qui ont ouvert la voie.

Beatboxing, as we know it now in 2022 has evolved in many shapes, forms and trends over the past 40 years. While the history can be dated back for many many years, we will look at it’s modern origins in the 1980’s and see how the trends and styles evolved over those years into the 1990’s.
The Human Beatbox
In the 1980’s beatbox pioneers such as Doug E Fresh, Buffy from The Fat Boys and Biz Markie made their name performing at hip hop shows across New York City.
With beatboxing being so fresh and new to the scene, it meant the sounds these artists created were very unique. For example Doug E Fresh was famous for his clicks and click rolls, Buffy for his breathing techniques and Biz Markie for his signature snare and rapping while beatboxing.

From videos and live shows you can see audiences were wowed by these skills that they had never seen before and really put a spotlight on these beatbox legends that paved the way for the modern generation.
Beatboxing in groups
The beatboxer played a key part in many hip hop groups from the 1980’s & 90’s. Their role was mainly to supply a beat for the emcees or add additional texture to tracks that were performed. Buffy from The Fat Boys is a great example of this, being the backbone of some of their tracks and live performances and they even had a track released called “The Human Beatbox”. Doug E. Fresh also used his beatboxing as part of the Get Fresh Crew where he rapped and beatboxed throughout one of their songs, “The Show”, “Lad Di Da Di” and “The Original Human Beat Box”. Going into the 90’s, Rahzel “The Godfather of Noise” & Scratch from The Roots would beatbox at live shows and performances to intro songs, add different dynamics to performances and would also MC on tracks for a true versatile performance.

We can see with beatboxers such as Rahzel and Scratch that the style and sound evolved a bit. Rahzel created more robotic and bass synth type sounds and Scratch truly imitates the sound of a DJ and vinyl records.

What is also an interesting find is the video below of Ready Roc C, the former beatboxer who toured with Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. In this performance he had a solo section in their show and performed covers of well known songs and TV Themes of that era, plus a fun segment imitating a video arcade game of Donkey Kong. This was definitely a great crowd pleasing performance and worked well for this kind of show.

Notable Sounds
Looking back at available content from these times we can see an amazing range of unique and original sounds. Beatboxer’s core or basic sounds (kick, hi-hat & snare) were strong and identifiable to the artist. For example you can hear the clear difference between a Doug E. Fresh kick and snare against the same from Buffy or Rahzel which made each beatboxer stand out in their own right. Added to this every beatboxer had a recognisable “special sound” or technique. We can hear this in Rahzel’s robotic sound fx and bass, Doug E. Fresh’s click rolls and high pitch synth sound and Buffy’s breathing/vocal technique and lip bass
Summary
Even in the early mainstream stages of beatboxing, we can see these pioneers of the art form really set the trends and building blocks that are still relevant and quite rightly used today. This validates more than ever that you must show respect to those who came before you and paved the way.

A BEATBOX EVENT WITH THE FRENCH TOUCH
The competition took place on Friday November 19th at Le Ferrailleur in Nantes.
It was broadcasted live on Beatbox France’s YouTube channel thanks to a high-quality video stream which was very appreciated by online viewers around the world.
Cela faisait plus de 2 ans que ce championnat n’avait pas eu lieu, autant dire que les participants avaient hâte de montrer leur progrès.
Cette édition a commencé sur une triste note, suite à des événements graves survenus au Grand Beatbox Battle 21, une sensibilisation contre le harcèlement et les violences sexuelles se devait d’être abordée et a été reçue avec bienveillance par le public grâce à l’intervention d’Aliénor, présidente de l’association toulousaine Underground Beatbox Battle.
L’événement a fait salle comble grâce à 300 spectateurs venus de toute la France pour supporter les participants :
16 loopeurs, pré-qualifiés par vidéo, ont eu l’opportunité de montrer leurs talents sur scène pendant 3 minutes chacun, devant un jury de professionnels.
Celui-ci était composé de 2 champions du monde et futurs senseis de Lyrebird, Saro et Faya Braz, ainsi que Chris TheOdian (champion de France de Loopstation 2019).
The common goal of all the participants was simple: to impress the jury enough to be qualified in the TOP 8 in order to compete in the Battle phase (1 against 1) and thus claim the title of new French beatbox champion in the Loopstation category.
LA RELEVE EST ASSUREE

Grand favori de la compétition, BreZ (champion de France de Loopstation 2018) est resté fidèle aux pronostics en remportant la compétition après une finale d’anthologie 100% bretonne contre Mike Fly.
Félicitations à nos deux finalistes qui nous démontrent que l’expérience et le travail portent toujours leurs fruits 😉

Par ailleurs, ce sont 9 participants sur 16 qui réalisaient leur première prestation en physique à un championnat de France et autant vous dire qu’ils nous ont agréablement surpris !
Mention spéciale à Ipso, qui remporte le prix du Best Show de cette année grâce à sa musicalité à faire rougir Tom Thum.

On félicite également Elash, 13 ans seulement, qui pour sa première participation a su faire danser la foule comme il se doit grâce à des drops de qualité.
Cerise sur le gâteau, on a eu la chance d’assister à des showcases exclusifs en commençant par Robin (champion de France 2017 catégorie Loopstation) aux commandes de la fameuse RC-505 MK2. Merci commissaire !

RETOUR AUX SOURCES DE LA LOOPSTATION
Unlike the Grand Beatbox Battle 21, only one of the 16 participants chose to use a “second device” other than the loopstation RC-505 (a second device allowing the use of additional effects) and it was Vincent Vinel a.k.a. Double V using the Line 6 from Helix.

Un retour à une utilisation plus « classique » de la loopstation donc, pour le plus grand bonheur des puristes de la machine.
Mais tout le monde attend impatiemment de pouvoir utiliser le nouveau modèle prometteur de loopstation la Boss RC 505 Mark 2alias. MK2 en précommande depuis peu et qui devrait apporter un vent de fraîcheur grâce à sa nouvelle gamme d’effets et fonctionnalités.
Cela signifie que cette édition était la dernière avec uniquement le modèle original du boucleur.
LES DIFFICULTES DE LOOPER EN LIVE
Seul bémol de l’événement, certains loopeurs ont dû recommencer leur round à cause de problèmes techniques ou par manque d’expérience scénique.
Cela nous rappelle l’importance d’une bonne préparation en amont mais également sur scène pour éviter un maximum de mauvaises surprises.
Bien que la situation actuelle permette difficilement de faire ses armes en live, ça nous donne des idées de sujets de cours sur la loopstation pour pallier ces difficultés 😉

A BEATBOX EVENT WITH THE FRENCH TOUCH
The competition took place on Friday November 19th at Le Ferrailleur in Nantes.
It was broadcasted live on Beatbox France’s YouTube channel thanks to a high-quality video stream which was very appreciated by online viewers around the world.
It had been more than 2 years since this championship had taken place, suffice to say that the participants were eager to show their progress.
This edition began on a sad note, following severe events at the Grand Beatbox Battle 21, an awareness against harassment and sexual violence had to be addressed and was kindly received by the audience thanks to the intervention of Aliénor, president of the Toulouse beatbox association Underground Beatbox Battle.
The event was sold out thanks to 300 spectators who came from all over France to support the participants:
16 loopers, pre-qualified by video, had the opportunity to show their talents on stage for 3 minutes each, in front of a jury of professionals.
This one was composed of 2 world champions and future senseis of Lyrebird, Saro and Faya Braz, as well as Chris TheOdian (French Loopstation champion 2019).
The common goal of all the participants was simple: to impress the jury enough to be qualified in the TOP 8 in order to compete in the Battle phase (1 against 1) and thus claim the title of new French beatbox champion in the Loopstation category.
SUCCESSION IS ASSURED

Top favourite of the competition, BreZ (French Loopstation champion 2018) remained faithful to the predictions by winning the competition after a final of anthology 100% Breton against Mike Fly.

Furthermore, 9 out of 16 participants made their first live performance physically at a French championship and they were pleasantly surprised!
Special mention goes to Ipso, who won this year’s Best Show title thanks to his musicality which could make Tom Thum blush.

We also congratulate Elash, only 13 years old, who for his first participation knew how to make the crowd dance as it should thanks to quality drops.
The icing on the cake was the chance to witness exclusive showcases starting with Robin (2017 French Loopstation Champion) in complete control of the famous RC-505 MK2. Thank you, Commissioner!

BACK TO THE ROOTS OF LOOPSTATION
Unlike the Grand Beatbox Battle 21, only one of the 16 participants chose to use a “second device” other than the loopstation RC-505 (a second device allowing the use of additional effects) and it was Vincent Vinel a.k.a. Double V using the Line 6 from Helix.

We saw a return to a more “classic” use of the loopstation, with the greatest happiness from the purists of the machine.
But everyone is waiting impatiently to be able to use the promising new loopstation model theBoss RC 505 Mark 2a.k.a. MK2 recently in pre-order which should also bring a breath of fresh air thanks to its new range of effects and features.
This means that this could be the last edition with only using the original model of the looper.
THE DIFFICULTIES OF LIVE LOOPING
The only downside of the event was that some loopers had to start their round again because of technical problems or lack of stage experience.
This reminds us of the importance of good preparation in advance but also on stage to avoid a maximum of bad surprises.
Although the current situation makes it difficult to earn his spurs live, it gives us ideas of course topics on the loopstation to overcome these difficulties 😉

The LYREBIRD team was at the Grand Beatbox Battle 2021 (GBB for short) at Warsaw in 🇵🇱 Poland for the 12th edition of the biggest international beatbox battle which took place from October 22nd to 25th, 2021. Here is the summary of the results and the strongest moments we had the chance to live.
An edition awaited more than ever
This collector’s edition, after having been postponed several times, finally took place with 2 new categories: “Tag Team Loop” (duo of loopers) and “Crew” (team of 3 members minimum) to the delight of the community.
Beatboxers and fans from all over the world gathered at Park Expo XXI during the competition, to share an unforgettable moment between enthusiasts : more than 80 participants, 3,000 spectators on site and 30,000 live on the YouTube livestream of Swissbeatbox !
This year, the organizers have gone all out:
A huge stage lined with gigantic LED screens to allow everyone to enjoy the details of the battles, but also exclusive showcases, such as those of 🇬🇧 ReepsOne, 🇫🇷 UniTeam, 🇫🇷 Saro or even 🇺🇸 Spiderhorse the whole highlighted by our favorite host 🇨🇦 Scott Jackson!

Best of all, this year those watching the competition on the stream had the pleasure of seeing 🇬🇧 Hobbit and 🇪🇸 Freddy Beat commenting on the battles live.
Aside from a few sound problems, we can say that this edition was a great success, and it was a pleasure to be back with the family after 2 years of absence!

In 12 years of competition the solo category’s champion title was the only one missing for France. Problem solved hands down by managing to have 2 French finalists 😃

Beatbox events: the ideal way to progress
We see that the beatbox evolves quickly thanks to the transmission and exchanges during community events such as online or physical battles.
This kind of initiative advances the discipline, gives motivation to continue to improve and experience ever stronger emotions.
This is what we want to promote with LYREBIRD via our community platform where you can share with other enthusiasts and soon participate to international events.
In addition, to help you to structure your beatbox you can get coached by masters of the discipline and increase your chances of participating in LYREBIRD events in order to show what you have learned 🙂

Duj, Jabe and Keumart: co-founders of LYREBIRD in Warsaw (Poland)
La team LYREBIRD était présente au Grand Beatbox Battle 2021 (GBB pour les intimes) à Varsovie en 🇵🇱 Pologne pour la 12ème édition du plus gros battle international de beatbox qui s’est déroulée du 22 au 25 octobre 2021. Voici le résumé des résultats ainsi que des moments forts qu’on a pu vivre en live.
Une edition plus attendue que jamais
Cette édition collector, après avoir été reportée plusieurs fois, a enfin eu lieu avec 2 nouvelles catégories : « Tag Team Loop » (duo de loopeurs) et « Crew » (équipe de 3 membres minimum) pour le plus grand bonheur de la communauté.
Des beatboxeurs et fans du monde entier se sont retrouvés au Park Expo XXl le temps de la compétition, afin de partager un moment inoubliable entre passionnés, soit plus de 80 participants, 3 000 spectateurssur place et 30 000 en direct sur le livestream YouTube de Swissbeatbox !
Cette année, les organisateurs ont mis le paquet :
Une scène énorme bordée d’écrans LED gigantesques pour permettre à tout le monde de profiter des détails des battles, mais aussi des showcases exclusifs, tels que ceux de 🇬🇧 ReepsOne, 🇫🇷 UniTeam, 🇫🇷 Saro ou encore 🇺🇸 Spiderhorse le tout mis en valeur par notre host préféré 🇨🇦 Scott Jackson !

Les events beatbox : l’ideal pour progresser
On constate que le beatbox évolue rapidement grâce à la transmission et aux échanges lors d’évènements communautaires tels que les battles en ligne ou physique.
Ce genre d’initiative fait progresser la discipline, donne de la motivation pour continuer à s’améliorer et vivre des émotions toujours plus fortes.

Thereafter, many beatbox generations have developed a passionated interest for Human Beatbox thanks to viral videos like this one 🗣️
🎼 How to learn properly the basics of Human Beatbox, discover original sounds and techniques, imitate instruments or reproduce famous songs in different musical genres…? Since very few beatbox resources were available, every beatboxer has developed his/her own way to learn how to beatbox.
Two main methods to learn beatbox
Watching Beatbox videos in repeat mode (tutorials, performance videos…)
The first method works for some people with facilities. For others, it’s difficult to maintain a diligence in training when results are not coming fast. Nowadays, there is a multitude of tutorials available for free on Youtube and you can still learn by yourself some great concepts in beatbox however it can be long and fastidious 😓

In my opinion, this second method is the most efficient way to learn Human Beatbox correctly as you can directly ask questions to a beatbox mentor or teacher, observe the right position to adopt for a specific sound or technique and get concrete feedbacks adapted to your level. However there are no or very few pedagogic structures both professionnal and accessible to everyone to learn Beatbox so there is no other choice than learning by yourself.
Nevertheless those learning methods are complementary and that’s the reason why I decided to create Lyrebird 😉
